Traditional Food Plants Cultivated and Managed in Home Gardens in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province.

This study aimed to document the diversity of traditional food plants in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The survey was carried out six local municipalities province, between March 2016 and September 2020. Information on socio-economic characteristics informants collected from wild cultivated managed home gardens recorded using questionnaires, personal observations, guided field walks with 145 informants. A total 58 edible belonging 46 genera 29 families were recorded. plant largest number species Solanaceae (six species), followed by Amaranthaceae Asteraceae (five each), Rosaceae (four Apiaceae, Cactaceae, Fabaceae sensu lato three each. main uses documented fruits (56.9%), leafy vegetables (29.3%), tubers (12.1%). Species that categorized as valuable, relative frequency citation (RFC) values exceeding 0.3, Solanum tuberosum, Allium cepa, Zea mays, Beta vulgaris, Cucurbita moschata, Brassica oleracea, Spinacia maxima, Daucus carota, Lycopersicon esculentum. findings highlight significance well-being communities province within context provisioning.
